Richard Lancelyn Green Bequest
The late Richard Lancelyn Green left his
entire collection, considered to be one of the world's greatest, of Sir
Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes memorabilia to the Portsmouth Library
Service.
The collection of 20,000 items, estimated to be worth over £2 million,
includes a full-sized replica of Holmes' study in 221b Baker Street based on
information contained within the Sherlock Holmes stories. Many other items,
including a copy of Beeton's Christmas Annual in which the first Sherlock
Holmes story (A Study in Scarlet) was published, and first editions
of every publication of Conan Doyle's work.
Richard Lancelyn Green was a world authority on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and
Sherlock Holmes.
PORTSMOUTH LIBRARY, Policy and Bibliographical Service Manager, Ted Ryan,
writes ".....there will be a lot of work involved in preparing and
cataloguing the books, archives and artifacts that form this large
collection. At present we have set a provisional target date of
May 2006 when the collections will be made available to researchers and the
